The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a nostalgic passion for the films of Hollywood's Golden Era such as Gigi and No, No Nanette so producer David Merrick took a gamble and went back to the novel of Bradford Ropes and the 1933 film version of 42nd Street. He adapted it for the Broadway stage adding a sprinkling of songs and dance moves from other iconic films. This tradition of dipping into other productions continued with the 2017 Broadway revival which saw the addition of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" from Moulin Rouge. On the opening night of 42nd Street at Broadway's Winter Garden, the audience were on their feet applauding as the curtain slowly rose and forty pairs of tap dancing feet were revealed.
The plot of 42nd Street is simple but takes you straight to the drama and hard work of stage musicals with a pinch of luck thrown in. Peggy Sawyer is from small-town America but has big dreams. She arrives in the city to a minor role in the chorus line but fate intervenes when the leading lady is injured and Peggy grabs her chance of stardom. The rest, as they say, is history.
42nd Street - award-winning razzamatazz
42nd Street has always garnered accolades from Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Musical to a Tony Award for Best Revival. Theoni V Aldredge's original wardrobe had a Tony nomination and is now on display at the Wick Theatre and Costume Museum in Boca Raton, Florida. Many actresses have played the role of Peggy but possibly the most famous is Catherine Zeta-Jones. In the 1984 West End production she was just a teenager when both the leading lady and her understudy were unavailable. Zeta-Jones stepped into the role and was so impressive it became hers and fact followed fiction.
