Sheeran's humble beginnings
But before we get to it, a little information about our talented singer! Ed Sheeran was born in the London borough of Suffolk, and with his father standing as an art curator and lecturer, while his mother is a culture publicist-turned-jewellery designer, his family have never really been strapped for money, with a happy childhood, Sheeran’s prodigal songwriting stems purely from talent. but music does, in fact, seem to run in the family, with his brother actually standing as a classical composer!
Of course, starting a career in music is never an easy endeavour, and it is common knowledge that Sheeran spent a large part of his early career couch surfing. It was also around this time that the young singer-songwriter decided to beat the great James Morrison as he embarked on his heaviest year ever, playing 312 shows within the year! Having cultivated a small following, along with the release of two EP’s (The Orange Room LP and You Need Me), Sheeran managed to secure a place touring alongside indie hip-hop rapper Just Jack, collaborated with singer-songwriter Leddra Chapman and later was invited to tour with Brit-pop singer Example! It was here when Ed Sheeran was finally acclaimed for his talent, after releasing the ever impressive EP, Loose Change!
Ed Sheeran's debut and rise to stardom
Releasing his debut album, +, in 2011, songs like “The A-Team”, “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” and “Lego House” proved that the fledgeling songwriter had a true talent. What was especially notable about +, was the elements of R&B and hip-hop that has become one of Sheeran’s trademark sounds! Firing his former manager in order to pursue music the way he wanted to, Sheeran audaciously recounts the whole thing in “You Need Me, I Don't Need You”, as The Independent's Andy Gill wrote “He (Ed Sheeran) is right to trust his own instincts: if he had followed the advice to tone down the crackhead portrait of “The A-Team”, maybe dye his ginger barnet a more commercial colour, and perhaps dispense with those hip-hop influences that could confuse older listeners, Sheeran might have wound up with a respectable, if predictable, career as a mainstream folkie singer-songwriter rocking the outer reaches of Radio 2. Instead, he’s a bona fide hitmaker with a colossal YouTube following, working in the argot and style of his own generation”.
If 2014 was anything to go by, Ed Sheeran’s following year was set to be one of his most successful years yet! Finally breaking America for certain, the singer soon joined the likes of friend and collaborator Pharrell Williams, topping ARIA’s end-of-year album chart (making Sheeran one of the only artists to boast contributing four impressive singles to make it to Australia’s top 100 in a r from w)! Aside from his stellar commercial success, Sheeran has also won two People’s Choice awards (one for Favourite Male Artist, the other for his album x), and has been the feature of more than a couple notable magazines!
x (released in mid-2014) peaked straight at number one in both the UK and the US! Much of the songs from x, were actually written after the release of his debut album +. Having collaborated with a host of artists already before working with Williams, despite having the material for a second album in 2012, Sheeran chose to follow the path of other British artists such as Adele and One Direction in their bid to “break America”! The move certainly proved to be the right one, as the following year, Sheeran performed three sold out shows in the ever impressive, Madison Square Garden! Leading the album with hit single “Sing”, it’s this track that featured the heavily talked about collaboration with Pharrell Williams! Considering the track was written with Justin Timberlake in mind, Sheeran is the first to embrace the references, saying how much of a fan he is of Timberlake’s debut album Justified! The following single to release from the album came in the form of “Don’t” and suffice to say a different side of Sheeran was seen.
