El Salvador's national side
El Salvador has a long history when it comes to soccer. In fact, the first national fixture took place in 1921, well before FIFA was formed and predating the first World Cup. By the 1930s, the side had enlisted a foreign coach (the American Mark Thompson), and was becoming a tough match up for neighbouring nations.
However, success wasn't sustained into to the 1950s, when the team struggled to make away fixtures owing to a lack of money. This all changed as government support increased in the 60s and started to compete in major international tournaments like the Olympic Games.
In 1970, the team managed to qualify for the Mexico World Cup, and managed to achieve this again in 1982, travelling to Spain (where they struggled to match better-funded nations). Since then, they have tried hard to compete with countries like Mexico and Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying and regularly come within 90 minutes of the finals, although success has eluded them.
If you want to support Los Cuscatlecos in any of the competitions they enter, their matches are played at Estadio Cuscatlán - a 44,000 capacity arena with a fantastic atmosphere in the capital, San Salvador. At Ticketbis you can find tickets for their exciting matches!
Great occasions in El Salvador's soccer history
The two high points in El Salvador's record remain the World Cup appearances in 1970 and 1982. However, results at the Finals were poor (6 games, 0 wins). So the most memorable matches involving Los Cuscatlecos have actually been away from the biggest stage.
Their sole championship victory is a definite highlight. In 1943, the team triumphed in the CCCF Championship (Central American and Caribbean Federation), thumping Nicaragua 10-1 in the process. They also had a great run of victories in the 1963 CONCACAF Championship, finishing runners-up to Costa Rica. This was repeated in 1981 when they were only defeated by the hosts Honduras and managed to beat Mexico en route to second place.
More recently, in qualification for the 2010 World Cup, El Salvador drew with the USA and beat Mexico, but couldn't back up these great performances with wins against smaller sides. However, these results show that when you purchase El Salvador soccer tickets at Ticketbis, they can defeat anyone on their day.
