Georgia Rugby Union origins and history
The Georgia Rugby Union was originally part of the Soviet Union's Rugby Union until 1991. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the team eventually formed its own team for the first time and applied for entry into the International Rugby Board. Georgia was accepted and proudly became the 52nd member of the Federation
There were many challenges ahead for this fledgling team, but the Georgians valiantly rose to each and every hurdle. In 1999, the team entered the 1999 Rugby World Cup held in Wales. In 2001, the team won the European Nations Cup and was elevated in the world rankings. The team would later qualify for the 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cup. Georgia's team is an eclectic roster, made up of players based across the world. The team is made up of players who play at all levels. Arguably one of the biggest fan favourites is Ilia Zeguinidze, a respected lawyer, team captain and talented player in his own right.
A national favourite
Alongside football, Rugby is one of the most popular spectator sports in Georgia. The sport is particularly popular in the south, with larger audiences than football. Rugby Union attendance has been on the rise since the country was accepted into the IRB back in 1992 and continues to grow. When Georgia played against Russia in a historic match at the national stadium in Tbilisi, more than 44,000 fans flocked to the venue to watch their nation beat the Russian competition at an impressive 17-13 result.
