Taking place in Halle, Germany in late June, this exciting grass court tournament is a key warm-up event for Wimbledon, akin to Queen's in the UK. In particular, it's where the great Roger Federer comes every year to fine-tune his game for the lawns of SW1, pitting himself against the likes of Marcos Baghdatis and Novak Djokovic. The 11,500 seater centre court is toastily heated, with a retractable roof that whisks into position in less than 90 seconds, so when you get your Gerry Weber Open Tickets at Ticketbis you can expect to see some great matches no matter what the weather.
20 years of the Gerry Weber Open ... and more
The gifted Frenchman Henri Leconte won the inaugural Halle tournament in 1993 after a convincing two set defeat of Andrei Medvedev. Among those to claim the trophy over the next ten years were the big-serving German Michael Stich, the Swede Thomas Johannson, and the mercurial Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who triumphed on three separate occasions. In more recent times the Germans Tommy Haas and Philipp Kohlschreiber, the plucky Aussie Lleyton Hewitt and the giant Czech Thomas Berdych have all achieved success on the grass courts of Westphalia. In 2015 the tournament became part of the elite tier of ATP World Tour 500 events, meaning bigger prize money and more ranking points, adding to the appeal of a fixture that already draws over 100,000 spectators annually. As well as singles, the tournament also plays host to highly competitive doubles matches. The veteran Jonas Bjorkman is a three time winner (with different partners), while Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram took home the doubles trophy in 2015 and 2016.
The reign of King Roger
2003 ushered in a new era as Roger Federer seized the first of his Halle titles in a decisive 6-1 6-3 trouncing of the previous year's finalist Nicolas Keifer. The Swiss maestro won four times in a row in 2003-2006 and three times in a row in 2013-2015, completing a tally of eight titles in total. Of these, perhaps the most memorable was his three set thriller against Marat Safin in 2005. To date, no other singles player has enjoyed anything like this dominance at the Gerry Weber Open – another impressive record to add to Federer's dazzling list of stats.
