Hello, Dolly! The Musical
Enjoy the opportunity to see Bette Midler on her return to Broadway with your Hello, Dolly! Tickets from Ticketbis. She's playing the lead role of Dolly Gallagher in this new revival of an earlier classic. Hello, Dolly! reminds us of a time when musical theatre really knew how to put on a song-and-dance show.
Hello, Dolly! - background
Back in 1964, the original production of Hello, Dolly! was based on Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker. In The Matchmaker a steamroller of a character sets out to land herself a rich husband in 19th-century New York. The new production features a book by Michael Stewart and a score by Jerry Herman along with direction by Jerry Zaks and choreography by Warren Carlyle, both Tony Award winners. While Carlyle's choreography is fresh and original it also pays tribute to the work of the legendary Gower Champion. Champion's work on Hello, Dolly! in 1964 is still considered one of the best stagings in the history of musical theatre. Santo Loquasto's new set complements the larger than life role played by Bette Midler with its look of over-decorated Christmas windows in New York stores.
The plot of Hello, Dolly! focuses on the meddlesome matchmaker trying to arrange a match between a wealthy New York merchant and a widowed milliner. However, all is not as straightforward as it seems as Bette Midler's matchmaker has her own eye on the merchant. The new revival opened at the Sam S. Schubert Theatre in April 2017 and is the sixth time Hello, Dolly! has been seen on Broadway.
Hello, Dolly! - a perfect mix of singing and dancing
Whether Bette Midler's eating a sumptuous meal with perfect comedic flair, kicking up her heels or belting out songs she puts on a performance that nearly steals the show. Amazingly this is Midler's first Broadway musical since Fiddler on the Roof fifty years ago. She's certainly a worthy successor to the original Dolly, Carol Channing. The 1964 production of Hello, Dolly! won an incredible ten Tonys, will the new production do the same?
