Hiroshima have been playing in the Central League since December 1949 but did not really begin to succeed until 1975, when they employed their first non-Japanese manager Joe Lutz. That season they won their first ever league championship and continued to be very successful up until the early nineties, when they fell out of contention for championships. In 2009 the side moved into the New Hiroshima Municipal Stadium, a ballpark with a 32 000 capacity that replaced their home of fifty-two years – Hiroshima Municipal Stadium. The main reason for their lack of success over the past couple of decades is a lack of finances. They have been unable to sign any free agents recently and they are also the last team to have sent a player to Major League Baseball – Hiroki Kuroda to the LA Dodgers in 2007.
Want to see if Hiroshima can turn it round this season? Well what are you waiting for? Grab your Hiroshima Toyo Carp tickets before it’s too late!
