The Indian music legend, Ilaiyaraaja, is to perform in Singapore on August 18, 2018 at The Star Theatre. He has performed all over the world and has recently wrapped up his tour of the United States. Raaja, as many refer to him nowadays, is hands-down one of the most prolific composers in the world given that he has composed an estimated 4,000 songs for more than 800 South Indian films. Ilaiyaraaja’s early days
Raaja comes from a family history of musicians. His mother was most likely his very first influencer as a prominent Tamil folk singer. And, it may come as a surprise to some and no surprise at all to others, his other biggest influencers growing up were Beethoven, Back and Mozart. At a young age her learned to play the harmonium and worked with his brothers in a music group performing for and with other artists. He later studying under Dhanraj Master with the guitar and piano. And in 1976 he met his break through moment with the film Annakili. Through the film he was able to put together all of his musical past and create songs that were authentic yet pleasing. Multiple songs became instant hits, like "Machchana Partheengala". Raaja’s new fame led him to opportunities to create music for more films and later his own genre of music.
Raaja’s awards and career
Besides being the first Asian to have a full symphony performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Ilaiyaraaja has achieved a very accomplished career, winning many awards in both film and music. He’s been honoured with numerous FilmFest and other film awards for Best Background Music, Best Music Direction and Best Music Director. He also received the International Film Festival of India’s Music Centenary Award in 2015 for Lifetime Achievement. Outside of the film industry, Raaja has recorded hits like “Oru iniya manadhu- Johnny” and “Un parvayil orayiram - Amman Kovil Kizhakale”, One of his many hits with S.P. Bala includes “En Kanmani Un Kaadhali – Chittukuruvi” and Idhu oru pon maalai pozhuthu – Nizhalgal”. Raaja has even has hit time in the limelight in the modern pop world as the Black Eyed Peas used some of his music in their song “Elephunk”.
