The opera takes place in the early years of the onset of the twentieth century, focusing on the geisha wife of Navy Lieutenant, Pinkerton. This geisha is referred to as the Madama Butterfly. Her real name is Cio-Cio-San. One more character who is important to the narrative is that of Sharpless, to whom Pinkerton tells that as a sailor, he is a believer in freedom and that his current arrangement with the geisha is a temporary one and he will soon be married to a real American woman. Of course, Butterfly is not aware this, being completely blissful about her married life with the American sailor. The narrative unfolds in the future acts as to what happens to this married couple. The standard version of the opera, which is the one that is performed all over the world, contains a total of 34 musical numbers. The original version is still performed but rarely.
