The Mexican Open - background and history
As an early event in the tennis calendar, the Mexican Open gives players a chance to practise serving their aces as the season hots up. Officially known as the Abierto Mexicana Telcel sponsored by HSBC, this tournament is one of the ATP World Tour 500 series of 13 events and part of the International Women's Tennis Association Tour. The Mexican Open became part of the ATP Tour in 1993 and the WTA Tour in 2001 and was originally held in Mexico City before relocating to Acapulco also in 2001.
For the first twenty years of its life, the Mexican Open was played on red clay courts before switching to a blue hard surface in 2014. It is held every February at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess Mundo Imperial, a venue that players consistently vote one of their favourite destinations. The event features two qualifying days and six exciting days of tournament play and has also gained a certain notoriety for the strange pear-shaped trophy awarded to the men's champion.
The Mexican Cup - where success is rewarded
Spaniard David Ferrer and Thomas Muster of Austria share the record for the most overall titles, with four each while Muster also has the record for the most consecutive wins which total four. Amanda Coetzer (South Africa), Flavia Pennetta (Italy), Venus Williams (USA) and Sara Errani (Italy) have all won two women's singles titles each.
The Spanish hero Rafael Nadal has also taken titles at the Mexican Open although a surprise was thrown in at the 2017 event. Here history was made when Sam Querrey became the first American to win the singles title along with the biggest win of his career after an unexpected win against Nadal. Ranked 40 in the world Querrey beat the number 2 seed Nadal in straight sets to claim both the generous prize pot and instant fame across the globe.
