Rugby in Romania – a sporting tradition
The game has surprisingly deep roots in Romania, with regular competitive matches played since the 1920s, but the game has fallen on harder times. In the 1980s and early 1990s, when the big Romanian clubs still had the legacy of state backing, the national team seemed the obvious long-term candidates to join the Five Nations after Italy (who eventually joined in 2000). With football offering a better-paid international career, Romania’s governing body needs to work hard to ensure new generations of talent aren’t lost to the sport.
Despite these challenges, Romania remain a tight-knit and competitive side, with a strong pool of nationally based players and others who have made the step up into the French leagues. In the Arcul de Truimf Stadium, the team also boasts one of the best venues in the European Nations Cup – how many other grounds have a huge, onion-domed church overlooking the far stand?
Romanian teams have traditionally been built around big, muscular forwards, in the mould of lock Sorin Socol and prop Andrei Ursache. So a 43-3 victory over a similarly physical and hard-running Namibia team, on the way to a European Nations Cup triumph, was especially pleasing. The flying Florian Vlaicu lit up the tournament, taking his points total to a new high.
The November 2016 win against the USA was an even better demonstration of the Romanians’ all-round game. The victory was effectively sealed by three superb first-half tries, which were created by surging phases of forward play, a delightful chip-and-chase and - after a bulldozing line break by Vlaicu - an audacious miss-pass in the backs and a finish in the corner. All in all, a brilliant answer to the athleticism and pace of the Eagles, and a statement of intent from the Oaks.
