St. Louis Cardinals History
The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the oldest sports teams in the world and were originally founded in 1882 as the St Louis Brown Stockings before becoming the Cardinals in 1900. Their most recent World Series win came in 2011 when they defeated the Texas Rangers 4-3. This World Series was the first to go the seven-game distance since 2002 and included highlights like in Game 3 when Albert Pujols hit 3 home runs in a single game, joining legends Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson as the only players in baseball history to hit 3 'homers' in a World Series Game. Some of the legendary players that have played for the Cardinals include Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby and Enos Slaughter.
The Cards' home ballpark is Busch Stadium, sometimes called "New Busch Stadium" as it replaced Busch Memorial Stadium in 2006. The ballpark has a capacity of 45,529. Interestingly, however, the stadium's record attendance didn't come during a baseball game it happened at the football match between Chelsea and Manchester City in 2013 when 48,263 fans came to watch. Despite its short history, the stadium has hosted 2 World Series wins (2006 and 2011) and also the 2009 MLB All-Star game.
