Istanbul Cup background and history
The Istanbul Cup was first held in 2005 and remains an important fixture on the WTA Tour. The tournament was originally an outdoor event held on clay courts until 2009, at which point the organisers switched the venue to hard courts instead. Istanbul was chosen as the venue of the WTA Tour Championships between 2011-2013, the Istanbul Cup was temporarily put on hold. The tournament resumed in 2014.
